GNU awk 3.1.1 / gsub

Hi,

I tried to eliminate the '|' in a file with gsub ("|", " ", $i),
but that does not work. There were blanks between
all the characters. The same with gsub (",",".",$i) works OK.
Also when replacing "|" with "\|" it does not work.
