Hi,
  when tar cannot extract a file (save files to some directory) because
of insufficient permissions, it gives this fooling error:

$ gzip -dc ../a.tgz | tar xvf -
a/contig_data.MYD
tar: a/contig_data.MYD: Cannot open: No such file or directory
a/contig_data.MYI
tar: a/contig_data.MYI: Cannot open: No such file or directory
a/contig_data.frm
tar: a/contig_data.frm: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
$

  This happended to me on Debian Linux kulan 2.4.20.
