OK, so I bothered to make an experiment: I don't have an instalation of
glibc-2.2.2 at hand but I took the appropriate versions of regex.[ch],
put them into the lib subdirectory and compiled grep --with-included-regex.
I wasn't able to reproduce the bug.
Thus, yes, I see your explanation as quite probable, now.
