Does "gunzip gettext-0.10.40.tar.gz ; tar -tf gettext-0.10.40.tar"
work for you?
If so, it might be a wrong setting of binary mode in either gzip's
standard output or tar's pipe input, or it might be a broken handling
of pipes in the operating system (Woe32 and cygwin.dll).
If not, then you know which program to look at: gzip or tar.
