Then you've chosen the wrong Tar port for the job: DOS programs are
not allowed to see the long file names on Windows NT, only their 8+3
aliases with those pesky ~1 numeric tails. It's as simple as that.
I suggest to find a Cygwin port of Tar. That should solve your
problem, since Cygwin ports are native Windows executables.
