Hmm.  I didn't consider that issue.

You'll have to build out-of-source until I can think of a way around this.

     That works.
     
     But now I get

     checking whether make supports nested variables... yes
     configure: error: source directory already configured; run "make distclean"
     there first

     make[2]: Leaving directory
     '/home/pspp/pspp-master-20201215/pspp-1.5.2-g60aae3'
     
     I do a distclean before configure. But I don't see where I could solve
     this.
