Greg, I was going to ask you to check if it is OK on BSD to comment out explicit reference to macros in M4 directory, so I am going to return the configure.ac to the previous version.

commented out.  With git head, autogen.sh builds  a configure that does
not have the macro expaneded.   If I reenable the line
  AC_CONFIG_MACRO_DIR([m4])
then configure seems to work.

I don't understand why the AX_CXX_COMPILE_STDCXX macro isn't being
picked up from my system, when presumably many others are.
