Dear Antonio,
I would suggest more than just renaming the file:
If the user is writing to an image file ddrescue should just automatically
create "<outfile>.resumestate" next to the outfile unless --no-resume-state
or a different location for the resume-state is specified.
If the user is writing to a device (using --force) he will either need to
disable the resume-state or have to specify a location for it (as a third
parameter just like with the current implementation).
This way unexperienced users will have a logfile if they don't read through
the manual.
This would have been quite helpful in some "customer support requests" on
this list in the past.
Also it would discourage the use of --force for unexperienced users (who
might have forgotten to zero the destination device first, etc. - as we have
seen on this list, too).
For the existing user base maybe a single-letter alias in addition to
--no-resume-state would be nice to get their old behavior back with less
than 18 letters (" --no-resume-state") of additional typing "effort".
Kind Regards
Felix Ehlermann

Betreff: [Bug-ddrescue] Suggestions to rename "logfile"
Dear all,
Some people think that the "logfile"[1] of ddrescue should be renamed.
That "logfile" means just a log of the program's activity, which is not
true of ddrescue's logfile.
I tend to agree that the name is somewhat misleading, but I have been
unable to find a suitable replacement name yet.
So I'm asking your suggestions about an appropriate name. Maybe among
all we well be able to find a better name.

structure
Thanks in advance,
Antonio.
