At this stage, I'm not asking you to redo the patch or anything like that. I 
can work with what you provided already.

I do think it requires more thought before merging it, but that isn't all on 
you. It's also on me and anyone else who wants to give feedback.

What I was really hoping for was an answer to my question: what is the most 
robust, correct and future-proof way of introducing changes of this nature? I 
still don't feel entirely satisfied on that front.

Maybe I'll merge it in with the changes that I consider best. Then we can have 
a more concrete discussion about what could be improved next.
