I've applied the above.

I don't understand this part.
The byte that was there before sure looks like it was \371:
$ cvs -q up -p -r1.32 regex.m4 \
|sed -n '/s = re_comp.*an/s/.*an//p' |od -o -An -N1
000371
And when I print \371, I get something (`u' with a grave accent)
that looks the same as what was there before:
$ printf '\371\n'
