[Bug-AUCTeX] Help with installing AucTeX 11.84

Dear AucTeX developers,

first and foremost let me thank you warmly for the much appreciated service 
you're paying to the TeX users community.

As of today I decided to upgrade my already existing (and working) AucTeX 
install from 11.83 to 11.84; to do this I at first unpacked the corresponding 
tarball and went for the standard ./configure --> make --> make install (as 
root).  However I noticed from the documentation taht it was still AuCTeX 
11.83 that I was using.  Hence I removed all AucTeX files from my system 
(Mandriva 2006) and tried the install again, but upon opening a .tex file 
Emacs (21.4.2) would return the following error message:

Error in init file: File error: "Cannot open load file", "auctex.el"

Now, I had from my previous AucTeX version the following line added to 
my .emacs file:

(load "auctex.el" nil t t)

However if I comment it out it AucTeX won't load at all.  the auctex.el file 
sits in teh folder /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/site-start.d, which is where I 
understand it should normally be.  Is there something I'm missing?  Thank you
