Follow-up Comment #1:
This problem is not reproducible on a stock AVRDUDE.
AVRDUDE 5.1 as released did not feature the signature
verification, this has been added post-5.1. So apparently
WinAVR shipped a non-release version here, with whatever
bugs it might still have had, or without a matching
avrdude.conf.
I verified that current CVS has valid signature definitions
for both MCU types mentioned in the report, and that signature
verification works for the ATmega8 (I don't own an ATmega32
to verify against).
