Looks like my STK500 was bad! I picked up a brand new STK500 and am now
trying again to program an external targer processor.(ATmega128)

The only good thing going for me now is that I'm no longer getting the
stk500_disable(): error from avrdude.

> "make" program
avrdude -p atmega128 -P com3 -c stk500 -U flash:w:test.hex

avrdude: stk500_program_enable(): failed to enter programming mode
avrdude: initialization failed, rc=-1
Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override
this check.

avrdude done. Thank you.

make: *** [program] Error 1

> Process Exit Code: 2

What is AVRDUDE looking for when it gets an error like this?

I have tested the connections from the ISP10PIN of the STK500 all the way to
the pins on the AVR of the PCB.
I was plannning on using the internal rc oscillator that should be ready to
go by default. Right?
Could this be causing my programming errors?
Here are my connections from the ISP10PIN of the STK500 to AVR on the PCB.

MOSI ->PE0 (PIN 2)
VTG-> VCC (PIN 21)
RST -> /RESET (Pin 20)
SCK -> SCK (PB1) (Pin 11)
MISO -> PE1 (PIN 3)
GND-> GND (PIN 22)

Thanks in advance for your help!

I have reseached all I can on the web forums and I can't come up with an
answer to my error below:

----------------------
avrdude -p atmega16 -P com3 -c stk500 -U flash:w:test.hex

avrdude: stk500_program_enable(): unknown response=0xe0
avrdude: initialization failed, rc=-1
Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override
this check.

avrdude: stk500_disable(): protocol error, expect=0x14, resp=0x11

avrdude done. Thank you.
--------------------------

Initially I thougth it might have been a damaged AVR but now I have my
design on a PCB with a new avr. (ATmega128)
All the connections are good, the cable is in place, and the com port is
available!

I am completely stuck! Do you guys think the stk500 is bad? I am not able to
see the signature byte in AVR studio or enter programming mode.

Thanks in advance for your help!

-Henk
