Honestly, i'm not quite happy with members-only lists, and have
received spam even to such subscriptions (avr-gcc and avr-chat) anyway
(of course, not through the list then but through my subscription
addresses), so it's not a real spam protection either.

It probably helps those that don't use spam protection.

Also, that's been a single spam message that made it through
avr-libc's redistributor by now during the entire lifetime of the

list. Faced with the 300 or so other spam mails i'm getting each day
(most of it filtered fine by spamassassin), that's bearable. I
wouldn't sacrifice the option to allow people not yet on the list to
post there, and unless there's really someone stepping forward to do
the job, i don't think anybody's got enough time to burn to act as a
moderator for non-member postings. (You're arguably doing a good job
for that on the avr-gcc and avr-chat lists, so this weakens my
concerns about non-member postings for these lists.)

I'm not even sure whether that kind of moderation can be had on the
Savannah mailing lists at all.

It's mailman 2, so unless they've cut features it's there :) If it looks like it causes a problem making the list members only for posting i'm sure we'll go back to open posting anyhow.
