Wrong. The article describes out of date versions of the software. You 
should use binutils 2.15 or binutils 2.16 (just released), GCC 3.4.3 
(3.4.4 is coming out soon, 4.0.0 has been released but is not very well 
tested, esp. for the avr), avr-libc 1.2.3, avrdude 4.4.0 or uisp 
20050207. There are other packages too.

The article also uses deprecated macros in its code examples. These 
macros are removed in the latest version of avr-libc (1.2.3).

If you're using FreeBSD, a binary distribution is availble via their 
ports system. If you're using Windows, you can download the WinAVR 
binary distribution

The open source toolset is also known to build and run on Linux, Mac OS 
X, and Solaris.
