[avr-chat] Difficulty writing eeprom with JTAGICE3

Using my new JTAGICE3 (JTAG mode, default parameters), I frequently get 
failures when using interactive mode to write eeprom (AT90CAN128 with 
16MHz Quartz), such as:

avrdude -p AT90CAN128 -c jtag3 -P usb
  ...
avrdude> write eeprom 0x0015 0xff
>>> write eeprom 0x0015 0xff
avrdude (write): error writing 0xff at 0x00015 cell=0x13


Doing the same action with an old JTAG ICE mkII works without any 
problem. Is this a known problem? any advice on how to make things work?

(The AT90CAN128 is quite new, the eeprom position has only been written 
a couple of times).
