I'm no fan of branching either.  We tried branching off 1.0 for libsimage
and keep head development in the trunk.  A week later, after some
configuration-related changes in the trunk, the 1.0 branch didn't work.
Apparently, my changes in the trunk affected files in the branch.  I never
cared enough to find out why and how to fix it (the 1.0 tarball was good
enough for me).  That's my only experience with CVS forking, and it doesn't
really call for a reprise.
