This works for me.  I'm running Kubuntu 18.04 and using this tip

 Create any BIST temporary files in writable temporary directory (bug
#55565).


This could also have to do with your video card if you are using
HW-accelerated OpenGL.

The fact that resizing the figure causes the image to re-appear suggests
something hard to debug, but relatively simple.  Somewhere a call to drawnow()
or refresh() is effectively not getting made.
