Perhaps it would be useful if you had a GIT server that can be easily
browsed in a web browser. Many of your users wouldn't know GIT even if
it hit them in their heads, and many others simply wouldn't bother
cloning the repo just to check the logs. Perhaps mirroring your
official repo on a different service, like Github, would be most
useful for passer-bys to check project progress. (For instance on
Github you could set up the mirror, disable all tools like wiki,
tracker, etc., and simply state where the official repo is located and
what is the official URL for cloning.)
