Rob is a bit shy, I think ;-), but he just implemented this in Hydra:
build trees can be kept upon failure, and examined via the web interface
(or downloaded).
This is enabled for all GNU projects now, see, e.g.,
<http://hydra.nixos.org/build/846879/>. It should make debugging
easier.
