Indeed.  There is that, and there is also the possibility to promote and
nurture existing efforts to allow some of the existing (but somewhat
outdated) hardware to be driven by GNU/Linux-centered software[1], like
what Harald Welte has proposed lately on the OsmocomBB[2] mailing-list.

In that particular case, the idea is basically to be able to issue and
receive phone calls on classical Motorola C1x[3] hardware that can still
be manufactured and sold.  That hardware is definitely not "smart phone"
like, but I guess that the knowledge, know how and working software
derived from such a project would be useful to build upon later on.

And even on the practical side, such a hardware, if driven well, has
excellent battery autonomy and is relatively cheap. I would certainly
buy and use such a device if I could be sure that it runs Free Software
only.

It would be nice if the FSF or other structures alike could raise funds
to push this kind of efforts through.  We need more positive and
constructive happenings at the organizational level, on that front.
