How about extending the 'terminal' button with a Shift+Click mode to launch a
root terminal ?
The necessary command could default to gksu or sudo, but should be configurable
in the preferences, because it heavily depends on the system (like, i have no
gksu at all and would prefer to launch a roxterm with 'su --login root', while
Ubuntu have no root login at all, they install the sudo thing.)
