Maybe you could please consider developing your ideas within  the metrics and kerning system in fontforge? :) Fontforge's metrics and kerning could do with a kick in the butt :)
That could provide the learning process and improve / bring new ideas to already existing software. 
Another idea would be to look at the Robofab / python toolkits to 'plug-in' to apps such as metrics machine and robofont.
