Thanks, I'll try your suggestion. At first sight it looked unbeseeming
but after thinking a little what you say seems sane.

P.S. I tried the DejaVu font in GIMP and the glyphs are actually
vertically centered in the textbox, so if GIMP uses the 'height' value
it seems to work good.
