[Freetype] could not find/open any font file

Hello everyone!

I recently installed freetype2 following the recipe in README.UNX, that is:

  # freetype-config --prefix
  /usr
   # ./configure --prefix=/usr
   # make
   # make install

followed by

   # make
   # ./install

in ft2demos, apparently without problems:

# ls -al /usr/lib/libfreetype.so.6.3.1
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root      1119675 Jun 29 10:27 
/usr/lib/libfreetype.so.6.3.1

# ls
ftbench  ftlint    ftmulti   fttimer  README
ftdump   ftmemchk  ftstring  ftview   testnames

however I cannot find any of the font files required by the demos. For 
example

# ./ftview 12 arial.ttf
could not find/open any font file
 error = 0x0001

What I'm doing wrong?
