I compile FreeType using Project Builder, but I haven't used any
makefile, I just added all the files to the project, namely ftmac.c,
smooth.c, pcf.c, ftbase.c, ftsystem.c, ftglyph.c, ftinit.c,
autohint.c, winfnt.c, ftcache.c, cff.c, type1cid.c, psaux.c,
pshinter.c, psnames.c, raster.c, sfnt.c, truetype.c, and type1.c.

I know that's not the recommended way of doing things, but it works.

I don't believe anyone has tried building FreeType with PB
before. Most either use the CodeWarrior projects that are provided
or build from the standard Unix stuff.

but headers and libraries aren't the same on macosx as they are for
  the original environment base/ftmac.c wants.

They are if you are using CodeWarrior...

is there an official project-builder project files/build for freetype already
somewheres? i shouldn't pretend what i have to get this far is usable yet.

There are not, but I would be willing to review any
contributions you wish to make.
