I tried it here on more than a half dozen operating systems on which
older versions of ftview are installed at my site, and all showed it
correctly.

Unfortunately, ftview is pretty limited: no manual page, no version
number report, and no help other than this:

        % ftview -help
        ftview: illegal option -- h

ftview: simple TrueType interpreter tester -- part of the FreeType
project

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Usage: ftview [options below] ppem fontname[.ttf|.ttc] ...

          -g gray-level rendering (default: none)
          -r R use resolution R dpi (default: 96)
-B use embedded bitmaps (default: none)

My installed versions of ftview are old: from October 1999 through
November of 2000.

I then rebuilt the latest version from ft2demos-2.0.8, without
installing it, and it now produces the failure that you saw:

        % bin/ftview 24 ~/tex/fonts/foxjump/FOXJUMP.TTF
        Segmentation fault (core dumped)

I then tried the other demo tools: all fail similarly:

        % bin/ftdump FOXJUMP.TTF
        Segmentation fault (core dumped)

        % bin/ftlint 24 FOXJUMP.TTF
        Segmentation fault (core dumped)

        % bin/ftmemchk 24 FOXJUMP.TTF
        Segmentation fault (core dumped)

        % bin/ftmulti 24 FOXJUMP.TTF
        Segmentation fault (core dumped)

        % bin/ftstring 24 FOXJUMP.TTF
        Segmentation fault (core dumped)

        % bin/fttimer FOXJUMP.TTF
        Segmentation fault (core dumped)

        % bin/testnames FOXJUMP.TTF
        Segmentation fault (core dumped)

The same tools worked just fine on a times.ttf file from Microsoft
Windows 98.
