Tools for font diagnostics

Hi,

I am a user of the freetype true type engine that has need of a tool
that can tell me all about a font.  There is a tool that is commonly
used
to create and edit fonts that I have heard mentioned, but cannot 
remember the name right now.

Could someone help me out with this?  Suggestions are accepted at this
point.  Let me know which tools you use and like for font creation/
editting/diagnostics, whatever.
