Hi David,

Nice. Porto Alegre is well know for its use of direct democracy in real
life.

Yes. Porto Alegre hosted many World Social Forums and we have a program called "Orçamento participativo" (participative budget), where the people of some neighbourhood can vote the realisation of local projects. This project started when PT (Partido dos Trabalhadores - Workers Party) was in city government. (After 16 years they lost the election last year, but they won the federal government with president Lula).

There is no much description of you project, neither code. Have a more
detailed description of its goals?

In fact we didn't started to code, and we are not willing to do it, because of demexp. It's better to join your project, and sum strenghts, right?

I don't know. It depends on what you are interested in. Do you code in
OCaml? Do you use GNU Arch? Do you know Lablgtk2?

I'm a newbie to Ocaml, but I'm really enjoying it. My objective with Ocaml is to write a compiler for a language called Human (my project), using Ocamllex and Ocamlyacc modules.

I'm very experienced with CVS and SVN so i thik i'll have no problem with Arch.

The first step would be to subscribe to demexp-dev mailing list at
savannah to follow developments.
If you are interested in the democratic experience political project,
you should also subscribe to demexp-en mailing list.

Ok, I'm in.

After that, you should tell on demexp-dev mailing list what are you
knowledge in computer science and what parts of demexp interest you
much. We are pretty open to any suggestions.

I'm forwarding to that list. I have a six years programming experience, especially in web development using PHP, Python (now for Symbian projects), and other open source langs.

I've started to write a web interface to demexp (to avoid installing a
dedicated client) but it takes time to code it. ;)

Yes.  Are you using Ocaml to do it?
I know that Ocaml is very popular in France, but it's not a very pop lang... Isn't it better to chose another language for web, like Python (with Twisted!) or Ruby (with Rails) ? Python can also be a good choice for cellphones and other devices.

We would be found of a port of demexp to this kind of devices. Maybe the
user interface should be adapted to suite the small screen?

Of course.

Well, on that point, we might disagree. One fundamental idea of the
democratic experience project is to allow people to ask questions on any
subject, at any time. But nothing prevent the demexp *software* to
follow your scheme, with, for example, a group of dedicated classifiers
that make public one question at a time.

It will be good to suit the "clients" needs!

No. Do you have the precise title of the book?

I'm going to look at my library and reply to you.

And my Portuguese is zero either! ;-)

Sem problemas.

Please join us and help us for the software and the project!

Ok, i'm in!

Yours,
david -- demexp software lead developer
