Login to your new machine and make sure that you can do an "id" of the
user.  This will tell you if your ldap service is working properly.  If
it returns the correct value, make sure that the ftp file in /etc/pam.d
is updated properly to look at LDAP for authentication. 

I have had problems with LDAP in the past with the default
G-Forge/SourceForge install, so you have to massage it a bit.  If you
have not already done so, make sure that the new systems LDAP points to
the original machine, or else it will brake.  I am not sure of your
setup, but it truly does sound like ldap is the problem.
