How about
ci -m-
meaning an empty commit message,
by analogy with ci -t.

Admittedly it is an incompatibility, but how many people check in RCS
files with a log message of "-"?

Just an idea, I'm not arguing strenously for it by any means.

    >        ci -l filename < /dev/null

Doesn't seem so bad, actually ...
