Try enabling debugging to get more information: Invoke telnetd with
--debug=report,options,ptydata,netdata, then it will print its
debug info to /tmp/telnet.debug file. Also add the following
line to your $HOME/.telnetrc file:

DEFAULT toggle authdebug
