Sorry Philip, but this is a very long email rehashing many things I've
addressed repeatedly.  I don't have anything to add.

I hope Dmitry installs the patch to project.el's
project-kill-buffer-conditions that he proposed so that this bug can be
closed.  Or some other patch like the ones I proposed.
