Hi Elena,

Good point. I had also thought about mobiles with similar resolutions but totally forgot to add that to my original mail yesterday. So, here goes...

Old iPhones and some of the Android phones have 480 x 320 (sometimes known as half-VGA or HVGA) which is smaller than the minimum area I proposed. I'd argue that we shouldn't worry about these since, IF we ever did have some kind of of mobile port I imagine these kinds of phones will be obsolete and out of circulation by then.

Newer and higher-end phones often have wide-VGA (WVGA) screens (and as Elena pointed out, the OpenPandora does too), which depending on who you ask, can mean 800 x 480, 848 x 480 or even 854 x 480. For those resolutions you could just run Adonthell in VGA and have some black vertical borders to the side. Potentially, you could move any HUD graphics (which typically would be overlaid onto the game view) into that empty space. Given that touch is the primary input on those kinds of phones and your finger obscures what's below it, so this approach could actually be a good use of the screen real-estate.

That leaves the iPhone 4's 960 x 640 resolution which is doesn't quite fit into this scheme. My proposal wouldn't fit this nicely. I suppose you could run it in portrait layout and make the top half of the screen a VGA game view and use the bottom half for HUD and controls. However, since the screen is physically quite small, everything would be extremely tiny.

Still, Adonthell on any of these mobile phones is a bit hypothetical at this point. I reckon that by the time we have a complete game using the 0.4 engine and might want to port it to mobile OSes, the technology will have moved on and this may be a non-issue.

That's my $0.02 anyway. As always, please feel free to comment on or challenge any of this stuff!

Regards,

Do you know about the OpenPandora_ gaming handheld? it uses a
relatively standard linux system, it already has some ports of open
source games like Battle for Wesnoth, and I believe that it could be a
great device to play Adonthell on.

The main problem, related to this thread, is that it has an 800x480
4.3" display, so it would need the 640x480 graphics. It also supports
OpenGL ES instead of the usual ones, that may prove an issue should
Adohthell decide to use it.

I'm not related to them, I just bought one from the first batch of
4000 and so I'm interested in getting interesting games to play on it
:)
