As a side note...

The software could generate self-signed certificates for testing purposes, 
small networks or personal servers but if they want their server/network to be 
able to share users/channels/groups/etc... with other networks then they'll 
need server certificates signed by a network certificate which would have to 
have been signed by us.

Nutty idea? maybe!
