I agree with ping about vim compatibility in key bindings. Maybe it is
possible to have separate key binding layouts, one compatible with vim,
other same as is now in ranger.

Vim has been around for very long time, so probably most ranger users
are more familiar with vim key bindings. Also vim has very good
documentation for every key binding, so ranger can reuse this excellent
documentation with minor changes. Vim's key bindings made big influence
to many other programs, including ranger...

So vim compatibility for key bindings is good thing, but this should not
stop ranger for introducing other innovative or just different key
bindings. So my suggestion to have both through key binding layouts.
Official ranger distribution could include both layouts, with ranger's
enabled by default, and vim layout can be changed with just one switch:

    :set keybindings=vim
