Ok, so "in as far as the commit message's motivation of the patch goes".   
Making the Grob's clone function pure virtual is not in itself a problem.   
Even while I don't remember any other pure virtual functions in our code  
base, that is not exactly a new C++ feature and/or expected to trip up  
either a C++ programmer or a compiler.
