Thanks for that response. Either option for the slice code works insofar
as it gets me past the reported error (I probably still have many
changes more to make to get the old code to work). I'll carry on using
the second version.
Paolo asks what this was meant to achieve. I'm no longer sure after all
this time. It is an experimental speech recogniser, so the code
accomodates all sorts of versions of the data and got chamged around a
lot. That's why the inheritance structure is so tangled
I'll have another look at it and see if I can work out whether it was
really necessary, and if so why.
