Thanks, Following the links from there were helpful, finally I was lead to:
--   remove     libglx.so
--   reinstall  (in synaptic) xserver-xorg-core
--   restart Xwindows system.

Then, redoing the tests above, they work, the imabge of the V showing
up, no segfault, but the following
prints:
     octave:4> imshow(VI,[])
Xlib:  extension "NV-GLX" missing on display ":0".
(but it works)

Then my only remaining problem is that with umfpack from another thread.
