Thank you, Thomas! I was the stupid user doing everything wrong.  
Nevertheless, thanks to Thomas' patience in helping me off-list, it  
worked out nicely in the end. I have successfully compiled Octave  
2.9.9 on a PowerBook G4 and a Quicksilver Dual-G4, both running Mac  
OS X 10.4.8.
