I've been using 2.1.72 for about six months on MacOs 10.3.9 (octave,

started experimenting with plots. When I run the following script for
two multiple plots the first plot appears OK but the second plot has
the first on superimposed on it. I've tried inserting various commands
to no avail - any help appreciated.

Multiplots are evil -- do not use them.

Well, if you must, try setting

automatic_replot = 0

before doing all the plotting.
