(invoking Octave on the Mac / X11 terminal does not find Octave)

Eric,

the X11 terminal and the 'normal' Aqua terminal have their own path  
setups. Try invoking Octave from the Aqua terminal. If you want to be  
able to run X11 apps from the Aqua terminal, see here: http:// 
fink.sourceforge.net/doc/x11/tips.php?phpLang=en
