Octave & GIMP.

Dear friend,

I use Octave & GIMP together for some image processing applications, and 
they are just a great tools, along with my plugin for GIMP that converts(to/from) 
plain-text ASCII matrix files (from/to)to Images.

You can save any image into a matrix, use Octave, and use GIMP.
Basically 


Image -> GIMP {Plugin} -> ASCII Matrix

                                     GNU
 Octave
                                           |
                                           +-------------->ASCII Matrix->GIMP {Plugin} -> Image
