Dmitri,

True, but why? How does this help me in not picking up Apple's /usr/lib/readline.dylib?

I have a proper readline.5.dylib installed in /usr/local/lib, so why should I use readline.a?

Dmitri,
Option? You can't build octave-forge if octave is built statically. The problem is simply how not to link against Apple's BSD readline...

One should be able to build a shared liboctave, yet link in
a static libreadline.a.
E.g. on my linux, octave has ATLAS linked in statically, yet
I built a shared liboctave...

Dmitri.
