Simple question: On older versions of Octave, I could type a few characters, then use Alt-p to cycle through previous commands that began with those characters (a la tcsh/emacs). Now when I hit Alt-p I see a colon and I am not sure what to do with that. (I couldn't find anything in the archive searching for alt-p or for meta-p.)

Here is an example to make clear what I am seeing:

octave:1> cov(x, <--I first type this, then I hit Alt-p
octave:1> : <--after I hit Alt-p, the "cov(x," is replaced with a
single colon
octave:1> cov(x, <--after I hit Ctrl-h (backspace), the "cov(x,"
reappears

I am seeing identical behavior in Cygwin (v. 2.1.49, downloaded yesterday) and on Solaris (v. 2.1.46 compiled with readline). I can recall commands with Ctrl-p or Ctrl-n and edit them normally using Ctrl-d, Ctrl-w, Ctrl-y, Ctrl-h, Ctrl-b, Ctrl-f, Ctrl-a, and Ctrl-e. It is only when I use the Alt key that I have problems.

Best,

Mike
