Problem with Octave 2.1.42 on Windows XP computer

I just downloaded from SourceForge web site (see the download link below) and installed Octave Version 2.1.42 on my Windows XP Professional computer

However, when I execute Octave, my inputs in the DOS window have the “|” character between all of my command inputs.  See the screen snapshot below.

 

I would appreciate any help that you can provide.
