I get this all the time when trying to set a new terminal when in multiplot
mode. Try
gset nomultiplot
Then set a new terminal
gset term aqua 40 or whatever you need.
I'm using GNU Octave, version 2.1.46 (powerpc-apple-darwin6.6).
Which is calling G N U P L O T Version 3.8i patchlevel 0
