Consider how the two versions treat

a = [1 0 0 0 1]';
n = length(a);

The first version finds a peak at 1 and 5 while the second doesn't. That being
said there is probably a way to get diff to do the same behaviour. It also
depends whether you trust peaks at the bounds of your data or not as well.
