OK, my new dual processor G5 Mac with OS X 10.3.3 is up and running, and I want to install a newer version of Octave. If Per, Paul, Guarav, and other
Mac users could provide some advice, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I've got the HPC binaries of octave+octave-forge installed.
It is version 2.1.55, so of course doesn't have the bug fixes of
2.1.57. I haven't run into any problems with it, but I haven't
been stressing the 3D stuff. It is installed in /usr/local, and
does not rely on fink.

I haven't installed the latest package. Earlier versions had
various problems such as missing the fortran libraries. So
Guarav made some packaging changes. You may need to
install the fortran compiler available elsewhere on the page.
