OK,
Well, I took the suggestion below (to use 2.1.55) and after a timely
false start, I ran into a new problem with installing octave-forge:

I think that next, I will try another suggestion that was given that
isolates the mex portion of the install, but if anyone has a suggested
fix for the above problem, let me know.
One other thing, now that I have 2.1.55 running, I ran into two quirks:
I had to add `clearplot;` to my .oct scripts that write plots to .png
files. Otherwise `gset('output','file1');plot(mydata1);
gset('output','file2'); plot(mydata2);` plots mydata1 twice to both
files.
The other thing is I get this error when I start octave:
error: no such file,
`/usr/local/share/octave/2.1.55/m/miscellaneous//PKG_ADD'
error: source: error sourcing file
`/usr/local/share/octave/2.1.55/m/miscellaneous//PKG_ADD'
Thanks,
Rob
